This Festival opportunity seeks to welcome all Maryland music students of any age to submit recordings for adjudication by MMEA Festival Judges.


For the Fall 2022 All-Access Virtual Solo & Ensemble Festival, there is no approved repertoire list, no instrument/vocal styling restrictions, and students and educators are encouraged to select repertoire that is representative of the students’ personal experiences and culture. 


​Submissions may include a solo performance by an individual (with or without accompaniment), virtual ensembles, or in-person small ensembles. There will be no scoring deduction for any student who records with masks, instrument bell bags or other PPE.

​The goals of this festival are to:

  • Elevate music and performances of music that represent the unique experiences and cultural diversity of our students.

  • Encourage selection of repertoire not currently on the state list.

  • Develop skills and musical growth for independent small groups and soloists emphasizing collaboration and musical critical thinking.

  • Encourage the inclusion of instruments not currently represented in standard choral and instrumental ensembles.

  • Provide feedback from knowledgeable adjudicators on students’ performances and technical skills.

​Festival submission recordings will only be accepted through the submission platform.

Solo applications will be submitted by caregivers (parent/guardian, etc.) for students through 12th grade or by the student themselves, if they are over the age of 18. All submissions must be in collaboration with the student and music educator.


​For ensemble groups, the sponsoring music educator, a designated caregiver (for students through 12th grade) or a designated ensemble member (for adults over the age of 18) may submit the application, in collaboration with the students and music educator.


The eligibility rules for this festival are as follows:

  1. ​All Maryland music students, of any age, in public, private, independent schools, homeschooled, community ensemble, or taking lessons with a private music educator, must be enrolled in the music educator's course or lessons for the 2022-2023 academic year. Music educator membership in MMEA/NAfME is not required.

  2. Regardless of musical ability, students who are not enrolled in the music educator's course or lessons for the 2022-2023 academic year are not eligible to submit. 

​Upon successful submission, the music educator who teaches the student(s) music education course or lessons must confirm the student(s) eligibility before adjudication will take place. At the conclusion of the submission window, educators will receive a list via email with their students, grade, instrument/vocal part, and piece performed. Educators will need to reply to the email confirming  their student’s eligibility confirmation and that they have reviewed the festival recordings.

​Submission Deadlines

The Fall 2022 All-Access Virtual Solo & Ensemble Festival submission window is November 1, 2022 to December 5, 2022 at 12:00pm.

Extension Requests must be received and approved by the Executive Director of MMEA by November 28, 2022 at 5pm. Extension requests received after this time will not be considered. Please plan to submit applications no less than three days prior to the deadline to allow time for troubleshooting, if needed.

​All Festival results will be released to the student’s music educators December 20-22, 2022.

Submission Fee

A recommended fee* of $15 for each audition is required at the time of submission. 

​All transactions are final and non-refundable. In the event a music educator indicates a student is not eligible for any reason, the audition fee will not be refunded. Please communicate with your music educator to ensure they support your student submitting to Fall Solo & Ensemble prior to submission.

Invoicing Requests for Educators Only: Educators, if your school, school booster, or district is interested in invoicing for Fall Solo & Ensemble fees for your students, please contact MMEA at for the invoice request form.  All invoicing requests must be completed by October 24, 2022 at noon.  Pay What You Can pricing is not applicable with invoicing and as such all invoiced submission fees will be the recommended $15.

​*Maryland MEA is dedicated to ensuring all those seeking resources have the access they need. As such, applicants may choose a “pay what you can” option or the recommended fee.

Submission Requirements

All students must abide by the following submission requirements:

  • Each educator is responsible for assuring each student or ensemble has prepared the music. 

  • Students may submit recordings of any piece of music and on any instrument/vocal style they would like, as long as the music educator approves. There is no approved list of repertoire for this event.

  • Students are encouraged to play instruments/sing a vocal style not typically found in a standard Band, Chorus, or Orchestra ensemble. However, all instruments are welcome.

  • Students and educators are encouraged to select repertoire that is representative of the students’ personal experiences and culture.

  • Students may submit as many recordings on as many instruments/voice parts as they would like. Caregivers of students (through grade 12) or adults over the age of 18, who are submitting multiple recordings must fill out an online application form and pay the application fee for each recording. Each recording may only contain one piece of music.

  • MMEA cannot accept recording submissions by any other form (ex: telephone, mail, fax, or email.)

Special requests for alternative submission formats for accessibility reasons are addressed on a case by case basis, and documentation of disability must be provided. Please complete the MMEA Accessibility Service Form to request accommodations.

​Recording Requirements

  • Music educators/directors are to supervise and review the recording before submission.

  • Backgrounds and clothing must not display any identifying information including, but not limited to, students' names, the name of the school or district, school mascot, or location.

  • Solo submissions: At the beginning of the recording: the student must state their first name ONLY and the instrument/vocal part OR have a title slide at the beginning of the recording with the student's first name ONLY and instrument/vocal part. DO NOT state last name or name of school/organization.

  • Ensemble submissions: At the beginning of the recording, each person should introduce themselves by first name ONLY and instrument/vocal part OR have a title slide at the beginning of the recording listing each student's first name ONLY and instrument/vocal part. DO NOT include the student's last name or the name of the school/organization.

  • Only one video file per submission will be accepted online in the following formats: AVI, WMV, MOV, or MP4.  The maximum file size allowed is 2Gb.  Please be aware that the larger the file, the longer it will take to load.

Helpful Tips for Recorded Submissions

  • Read the recording process and requirements before you begin recording.

  • If possible, reduce any background noise (fans, TV, etc) during the recording.

  • View your recording in its entirety before submission to ensure it is complete.

  • Save a copy and label it so you send in the correct submission.

  • Do not wait until the last minute to submit! Prepare to submit at least three (3) days prior to the submission deadline to allow for technical issues and troubleshooting.

Adjudication and Scoring Rubric

Each festival submission is adjudicated by MMEA adjudicators. The only information the adjudicators see is the student’s first name(s), instrument/vocal part(s), and submission recording.

If an adjudicator recognizes a student or group, the submission will be reassigned, to avoid a conflict of interest.

All caregivers or adult students (solo submissions) or educators/directors (ensemble submissions) will receive certificate(s) of participation for their student’s submissions.  

We will not be offering pins or medals for this festival.

Questions and Communication

To help facilitate this virtual process, caregivers or students may need to communicate with MMEA staff for questions and support. We ask that the student’s music educator be copied on all messages to MMEA to assure transparency and accurate communication. MMEA staff will extend the same courtesy in the event staff needs to communicate with caregivers.
