Overview

Maryland Choral Educators Association (MCEA) is proud to announce the continuation of the Maryland Tenor/Bass High School Demonstration Chorus as part of the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) Fall In-Service on Friday, October 18, 2024. The chorus will include exemplary tenor and bass singers from across the state of Maryland in grades 9-12 (as of the 2024-2025  school year). All nominated students must be members of their high school choral class.​​​​​​​​​

Guest Conductor - Dr. George J. Wilkerson, Jr.​

George J. Wilkerson, Jr. earned the B.S. in Music Education from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, the M.A. in Music (Voice) from Morgan State University, and the D.M.A in Voice Performance from the Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University. He holds the Advanced Professional License from the Maryland State Department of Education in PreK-12 Music, 7-12 Theatre, and PreK-12 ESOL. Dr. Wilkerson has over twenty-three years of experience as a music educator, having taught band, chorus, and general music. Currently he is the Director of Vocal Music at Calvert Hall College High School, an all-boys private Catholic high school located in Towson, Maryland. There he teaches three choirs, general music, Basic Guitar, Basic Piano, AP Music Theory, Music Composition and Arranging, and Solo Vocal Music (private voice lessons). He is also the Tri-M Music Honor Society advisor and moderator for the Rock Band Club. Dr. Wilkerson is an active member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA), and the Maryland Choral Educators Association (MCEA); having previously served as an All State Chorus Auditions site host and manager of the Tenor/Bass Demonstration Chorus of the latter. He currently serves as the State Solo and Ensemble Manager of MCEA. In addition to his classroom choral teaching position, Dr. Wilkerson also performs regularly and maintains a private voice studio.

Accompanist - Mr. James Turk​

Mr. James Turk, is the Director of Vocal Music at DeMatha Catholic High School, in Prince George’s County, Maryland. “Coach”, as he is affectionately called, has directed the High School Tenor/Bass Demonstration Chorus before and with great success. An educator, director, pianist, and composer/arranger,  Mr. Turk has served as director of the Capitol Hill Chorale, the Navy Sea Chanters, and currently the choirs of DeMatha Catholic in Prince George’s County as well as remaining active with MMEA/MCEA. With over 35 years of experience in the field, he is in frequent demand as a guest conductor, clinician, announcer, church musician, and pianist.

Date, Location, Schedule

  • Date - Friday, October 18, 2024

  • Location - Kent Island High School, Stevensville (Queen Anne’s County)

  • Student Arrival/Check In - 9:00 to 9:30am

  • Rehearsals -  9:30am to 12:30pm

  • Lunch Break -  12:30 to 1:15pm - (Bring a peanut/tree nut free bagged lunch)

  • Session Preparation - 1:15 to 1:45pm

  • Session/Performance - 1:45pm*

  • Student Dismissal/Pick Up - 2:30pm

 

*Caregivers are encouraged to attend the performance as an audience member. 

 

Timeline/Participation Fee

  • Nominations Due from Educators - Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 12pm (noon)

  • Registration Window for Caregivers - Friday, September 27 to Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at 12pm (noon)

  • Participation fee per student - $25.00, due at registration

 

Registration forms will be sent directly to the caregivers email address(es) provided on the nomination form.

 

Educators Only - Educators who wish to be invoiced for their student’s participation fees may indicate this on the nomination form. Invoices will be sent after the registration window closes. Students of invoiced educators need not pay at registration.

Late Fee Policy - Invoices not paid within 60 days will be assessed a late fee. Invoice totals of $100 or less will be assessed a late fee of $20.00. Invoices over $100, will be assessed a 20% late fee, not to exceed $500.00

Performance Repertoire

Access to the repertoire for rehearsal purposes will be provided to educators at the conclusion of the nomination process. Access to the repertoire will also be provided to the caregivers after their students are registered.

 

Students are not required to have the music memorized but should be well prepared and be willing to put their music down at the conductor's request.

 

Transportation & Meals/Snacks

  • Caregivers/Students are responsible for their own transportation

  • Students must have transportation ready when the event is dismissed. 

  • Students must bring a peanut/tree nut free bagged lunch for the break at 12:30pm. Students are also welcome to bring additional snacks. (Food delivery/order, such as UberEats or DoorDash is not permitted) 

  • Students should bring a refillable bottle of water. MMEA will provide additional water if needed. 

  • MMEA is not responsible for any transportation and is not providing any food. There will be water fountains for refillable bottles.

 

Dress Code

Students should come dressed in their performance attire. There will not be a changing area.

  • White Top (at least ¾ sleeve)

  • Black Bottom (pants or skirt of at least calf length)

  • Black Shoes

  • Appropriate for a choral performance

 

What Should Students Bring

  • Music (folders will be provided)

  • Pencil with eraser

  • Meal/Snack

  • Refillable Water Bottle

 

Rules for Participating Students

  • Each student must be on time.

  • Each student must be prepared and follow the directions. 

  • Students will show respect for all supervising adults and one another. 

  • Creating a positive environment for diversity, inclusion, leadership, and teamwork is essential. All defamatory, abusive, slurs, profane, threatening, offensive, harassing language or actions are strictly prohibited.

  • Caregivers are not permitted to remain at the event until the session is open to conference attendees and caregivers as audience members. 

  • Students are not permitted to leave until the conclusion and dismissal of the event.

  • Students who bring a cell phone, laptop or any electronic device to the event do so at their own risk. MMEA is not responsible for loss, damage, or theft, nor any connection charges. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned OFF and stored out of sight during rehearsal hours.

 

Questions and Communication

To help facilitate this event, caregivers or students may need to communicate directly with MMEA staff for questions and support. We ask that the student’s music educator be copied on all messages to MMEA to assure transparency and accurate communication. MMEA staff will extend the same courtesy in the event staff needs to communicate with caregivers and/or students.

IMPORTANT POLICIES - CAREGIVERS OF PARTICIPANTS MUST AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING:

 

Covid-19 Protocols For MMEA In-Person Events

To ensure everyone's health and safety to the best of our abilities, MMEA is asking everyone to approach any possible Covid diagnosis or possible exposures with caution. Students are encouraged to remain home if they are feeling ill/symptomatic. MMEA reserves the right to ask for proof of a negative covid test prior to the event. 

 

MMEA will continue to monitor and address this changing landscape of the Covid pandemic. Please note, MMEA and/or the hosting school system reserves the right to change this policy. Should masks be required, they must be at least a 2-layer mask. Well fitted KN-95 or N-95 masks are encouraged.  MMEA supports any participants' use of PPE. 

 

Photo Release Statement 

The Caregiver completing this form consents to the publication and use of their student’s first name/ likeness for the purpose of promotion, publicity, advertising, or other manner or media by the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) or any other representative authorized to act on behalf of the aforementioned entity. Likeness shall include, but not be limited to, photographs, sound and/or video recordings, films, broadcasts, brochures, publications, reports, web pages, promotional materials or any other audio-visual, electronic, printed, tangible work in any media or format, now known or hereafter to become known, and/or reproductions of any of these. These items are the property of the MMEA and that neither the caregiver, nor the student, shall have any right of review or approval regarding the use of the student’s first name/likeness in such material. The Caregiver hereby releases and hold harmless, the MMEA along with their respective employees, agents, affiliates, sponsors, or other representatives from any and all claims, demands, or causes of action arising out of the use of the student’s first name and/or likeness, in accordance with the terms of this release. It is understood and agreed that neither the caregiver, nor the student, will be compensated in any way for the use of my student’s first name and/or likeness by MMEA. (MMEA will not use a student’s last name in a public forum for this event.) 

 

Statement of Participation 

The Caregiver completing this form understands the information provided and approves the student’s  participation in this event/activity. Participation in the activity is entirely voluntary and requires participants to abide by applicable rules and standards of conduct. The caregiver releases Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA), the activity coordinators, and all directors, officers, employees, volunteers, agents, and related parties from any and all claims or liability arising out of this participation. Caregivers also understand that MMEA is not providing any transportation to/from this event.
