All State Dates

Congratulations to your student for being accepted as a 2022 Maryland All State musician! We are excited to return to in-person music making this year, and look forward to meeting you and your student. The dates of the one-day All State festivities are as follows:

  • Saturday, May 14, 2022 - Junior Chorus, Senior Chorus

  • Saturday, March 19, 2022 - Junior Orchestra, Senior Orchestra

  • Sunday, March 20, 2022 - Junior Band, Senior Band, Senior Jazz Band

Registration and Fees

Registration is now closed.

 

ALL REGISTRATIONS OR REQUESTS FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE MUST BE MADE BY WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 2022 AT 11:59pm.

All transactions are final and non-refundable unless the MMEA Executive Board takes action to cancel the event. In the event of cancellation, participants will have the opportunity to request a refund. Credit card processing and platform fees will not be refunded under any circumstance.

 

Final rehearsal and performance schedules are being finalized and will be communicated shortly. Please be prepared for this to be an all day event.

 

All rehearsals and performances will be conducted at the Bowie State University Fine and Performing Arts Center, in Bowie, Maryland.  Please read the "Know Before You Go" document linked at the top of the page for full information.

Financial Assistance:

Requests are now closed.

MMEA works to ensure every student and educator has access to the resources they need to be successful. As such, we strive to ensure no one is turned away due to financial barriers. If you need financial assistance covering the $100 All State participation fee and your student qualifies to receive free or reduced meals from your school or school system, you are also eligible to apply for an All State participation fee scholarship.

Refunds

If you registered or purchased tickets to the previous date and cannot participate on the new date, you may Request a Refund.  All refund requests must be submitted by Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at 11:59pm.  We are processing refunds in the order they are received.

Tickets and Concert Recordings

Thank you for joining us for the return of our in-person All State Ensembles.

 

Due to venue restrictions, tickets are limited to two per student. We apologize for any inconvenience. We encourage everyone to purchase audio and/or video recordings of the concert and have a viewing party with your loved ones!  Share it on social media and tag MMEA.
 

All concert attendees must purchase tickets online before arriving at the event. Any tickets purchased for the previous date will be honored.There will be no tickets sold at the door.  Attendees must properly wear a mask at all times and present proof of full COVID-19 vaccination before entering the concert hall. 

 

Doors to the concert hall will open to the public 15-minutes prior to the concert start time.

MEET THE CONDUCTORS!

Sherlee Glomb is the choral director at South County Middle School in Fairfax County. She received her Master of Music Education degree from Florida State University and received a Bachelors of Music degree from James Madison University. Mrs. Glomb has over twenty years of public school teaching experience at every level throughout Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County and Orange County in Winter Park, Florida. Mrs. Glomb has given conference presentations at in Florida and for ACDA in Pennsylvania and her groups have performed twice now at Virginia’s state conference. Mrs. Glomb has held district chair positions in Fairfax County and served as a clinician for middle and high school honor choirs, as well as a festival adjudicator, throughout the state of Florida, Virginia, and Maryland. She is currently the Soprano/Alto Repertoire and Resource Chair for Virginia ACDA. She is a member of NAfME, VMEA, ACDA and SAI.

Amy Sprague Moir studied piano and voice at James Madison University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in music education.  In 2008, she graduated with a Master of Music Education from Florida State University where she focused her research on adolescent changing voices. This is her 21st year teaching choral music for Fairfax County Public Schools.   Mrs. Moir served as Fairfax County Choral Directors Association Treasurer and as a coordinator of the All Virginia Middle School Honor Choirs sponsored by Virginia ACDA. She currently serves as the Past-President of the Virginia Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. She is a member of the Virginia Music Educators Association and enjoys attending conferences to connect with colleagues, refresh instructional strategies, and learn new material. Even with all these experiences, she learns best from and with her students. Watching them develop into responsible young adults through the empowerment of music is the best part of her job. When not pursuing music, she spends her time with her twin boys, daughter, husband, and two dogs…preferably in nature.

As the Music Director/Conductor of the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra, the AACC Symphony Orchestra (Anne Arundel Community College) and a frequent guest conductor on the national and international scene, Anna Binneweg repeatedly captures audiences and orchestras with her enthusiasm and passion for music. Over the course of her career, Dr. Binneweg has performed in some of the nation’s most reputable concert venues including the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall in Washington, D.C., the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Her international conducting experiences include tours to Austria, Spain and debut appearances with the Chernihiv Philharmonic (Ukraine), Lviv Virtuosi (Ukraine) and the Minsk Conservatory Orchestra (Belarus).  Earning a doctorate degree of music in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University, she has also served on the conducting faculties at Loyola University (Chicago, IL), the Sherwood Conservatory of Music (Chicago, IL), and American University (Washington, DC). Binneweg is the is the recipient of the 2015 Annie Award for the Performing Arts awarded by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County. After teaching three years in NC, Ms. Jackson taught middle and high school orchestras in Henrico County, VA for 17 years. August 2012, she brought her energetic style of teaching to Hammond Middle School in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). Ms. Jackson coordinated innovative and collaborative programming that increased participation in strings throughout ACPS She was named Hammond Middle School Teacher of The Year 2017 and nominated in 2018 and 2019. Ms. Jackson is highly sought after to conduct and adjudicate full and string orchestras. She proudly serves as director of Arlington Concert Orchestra, a full symphonic orchestra for adults who have returned to playing their instruments. June 2020, Ms. Jackson accepted the position of orchestra director at Alexandria City High School, where the orchestra program continues to reach new heights of excellence. This summer, she looks forward to serving as Music Director of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival String Academy.

Dr. Andrea E. Brown was appointed Associate Director of Bands at the University of Maryland in 2018 where she conducts the Wind Ensemble and serves as the Director of Athletic Bands. Brown is formerly a member of the conducting faculty at the University of Michigan and the Georgia Institute of Technology. A proponent of inclusion and equity issues in music, Brown is a frequent guest speaker on these topics. She currently serves on the CBDNA Diversity Committee and is the founder of “Women Rising to the Podium”- an online group of over 4100 members supporting and celebrating women band directors. Brown also serves as the chair of the Sigma Alpha Iota Women’s Music Fraternity Graduate Conducting Grant, and is a founding member of the Drum Corps International In Step Committee. She is a frequent guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator in the US, Europe, and Asia. She resides just outside of Washington, D.C. with her dog Applesauce.

Colonel Jason K. Fettig is the 28th Director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. He is music adviser to the White House, regularly conducts at the Executive Mansion, and led the band during the 2017 and 2021 Presidential Inaugurations. Throughout his career, Col. Fettig has been deeply committed to music education. He authored and conducted the band’s Young People’s Concert for nine years and prioritized the band’s presence in schools through educational initiatives in the classroom and online, including his initiative “Digital Rehearsal Hall.” Col. Fettig launched an ambitious project to re-record all of John Philip Sousa’s marches to provide these free performances and educational materials online. In May 2019, Col. Fettig and the Marine Band, in partnership with the All-Star Orchestra conducted by Gerard Schwarz, won an Emmy at the 62nd Annual New York Emmy Awards for a program entitled “New England Spirit.” Col. Fettig has served as a clinician or guest conductor at over 40 universities and colleges, teaches at international conducting symposia, and has appeared as conductor for national honor band and All-State festivals around the country.

At home in both classical and jazz idioms, Tim Powell is an active and established freelance musician and educator in Maryland. He has performed with the Baltimore, Alexandria, and Altoona Symphony Orchestras as well as Frank Sinatra Jr., Gloria Gayner, Ben Folds, The Four Freshman, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Frankie Avalon, Ben E King, the Mike Kamuf Little Big Band, and Rick Hirsh. Tim Powell received his BS in Music Education from Penn State University, a MM in Jazz Studies and a DMA in Saxophone Performance from the University of Maryland, College Park. The focus of his doctoral studies included electro-acoustic music for saxophone and contemporary saxophone repertoire. Tim Powell is the Director of Jazz Studies and Saxophone Professor at the University of Maryland. He has also served on the faculties of the Pennsylvania State University, Rowan University, Frostburg State University, Montgomery College, and Anne Arundel Community College.

Required Releases, Consents, Behavior/Rehearsal Rules

 

Consent for Medical Care

I give my permission to share this information with the supervising adults and medical staff for the safety of my child. In the event of an emergency, I give consent to transport the above named child to the nearest hospital.

 

Covid Assumption of Risk

By registering for/attending this event, I acknowledge that I fully understand the nature and extent of the risks presented by COVID-19 due to my in-person attendance at this event, including the risk that Covid-19 may lead to severe illness or death.  I also understand and acknowledge that there are risks of exposure to COVID-19, whether resulting from travel through high risk areas, the failure of other individuals to follow proper COVID-19 protocols, such as maintaining proper social distancing and proper hygiene measures, and other such risks. While I understand that Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) has taken reasonable steps to address the risks presented by COVID-19, I recognize that the COVID-19 protocols being utilized at the event may be insufficient to prevent my contracting COVID-19 and suffering any related injuries, and that I expressly nevertheless assume all of these risks.  

 

With full knowledge of the risks involved, therefore, I hereby release, waive, and discharge MMEA, its officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, from any and all liability, loss, damage, claims, demands, actions, and causes of action whatsoever, including reasonable attorneys' fees, directly or indirectly arising out of or related to any loss, damage, injury, or death, that may be sustained by my child while participating in this event or while in, on, or around the event premises that may lead to exposure or harm due to COVID-19.

 

COVID-19 Testing and Mask/Bell Cover Requirements

  • All students must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test before being allowed to participate.  Tests must be taken within 48 hours of the event.  Negative at-home test results are acceptable.

  • All students must wear masks at all times, except during lunch/mealtime.  Masks must be worn correctly and cover the mouth and nose completely at all times.

  • All students playing brass or woodwind instruments must bring bell covers for their instruments.  Bell covers must be used during all rehearsals and performances.

 

MMEA Inspection Process For All Students

MMEA authorities may, without a search warrant, inspect students or protected student areas based on a reasonable suspicion that a MMEA policy, rule, regulation or law has been violated. The inspection is in a manner reasonable in scope to maintain order and discipline at MMEA events, to promote the educational environment, and protect the safety and welfare of students and volunteers. MMEA authorities may seize any illegal, unauthorized or contraband materials discovered in the search. Items of contraband may include, but are not limited to, non-prescription controlled substances, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, barbiturates, apparatus used for controlled substances, alcoholic beverages, nicotine, e-juice, nicotine delivery systems, nicotine e-delivery systems, weapons, explosives, poisons, and stolen property. Such items are not to be possessed by a student while they are at MMEA events. Possession of such items will be grounds for disciplinary action including expulsion from the festival and may be reported to local law enforcement officials. An inspection report will be completed by the Ensemble Manager, Component President, or MMEA Executive Director.

 

Behavior Rules for Participating Students

Each participant is entitled to a successful All State experience. Any member who is not considerate of that right will be dismissed to assure the success of the remaining membership. Each member is expected to adhere to the rules below. Do not ask to be excused from any part of the schedule or presume you may be admitted late to any part of the schedule.

 

  • Students will show respect for all supervising adults and one another. Creating a positive environment for diversity, inclusion, leadership, and teamwork is essential. All defamatory, abusive, slurs, profane, threatening, offensive, harassing, or illegal language or actions are strictly prohibited. 

  • All students will adhere to all aspects of the published schedule, including meals, and students must wear the identifying badge at all times. Students are required to check in at each meal/ activity

  • Students are prohibited from use or possession of tobacco, alcohol or drugs (except those indicated on the medical form) at all times. Possession of any of these items is against the law for minors. Vaporizers and electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are also not permitted.  Students in violation of this rule are subject to immediate dismissal, in addition to consequences from the student’s school. Students who are aware of violations of this rule, as well as other rules, and who do not report the violation to the Group Manager or chaperone, are also subject to dismissal, and possible consequences at the student’s school.

  • Students are required to remain in their assigned area at all times.

  • Students will touch only their personal instrument, unless directed otherwise by the Group Manager. This includes percussion instruments as well as any pianos, including event location pianos.

  • Students who bring a cell phone, laptop or any electronic device to the event do so at their own risk. MMEA is not responsible for loss, damage or theft nor any connection charges. Those are the responsibility of the student. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned OFF and stored out of sight during rehearsal hours.

 

Rehearsal Rules for Participating Students

  • Each student must know his or her music thoroughly upon arrival.

  • Each student must bring music and a pencil with eraser to each rehearsal.

  • Tardiness or absence from rehearsal will not be tolerated. Any absence or tardiness could result in immediate dismissal.

  • No one is to leave until the conclusion and dismissal of each rehearsal/concert.

  • Students are not to engage in talking, cell phone use, eating or gum chewing during rehearsal.

 

Behavior Rules for Caregivers of Participating Students

These rules are for the safety of all students:

  • Once students have completed the registration process and received their name badge, all parents are to say goodbye to their child until the conclusion of the performance.

  • Parents should advise and remind students to show respect for all supervising adults and one another. Creating a positive environment for diversity, inclusion, leadership, and teamwork is essential. All defamatory, abusive, slurs, profane, threatening, offensive, harassing, or illegal language or actions are strictly prohibited. 

  • Parents are not allowed to visit any rehearsals of the All State Ensembles.

  • If parents need to drop off any items for their children, they are to leave the item with MMEA Staff with their child’s name on it and the name of the ensemble.

  • Parents are not to take their children to any meals away from the All State Ensemble.

  • If you need to contact your child for any reason, please call the group manager.  Please remember that your child's cell phone must be off during rehearsals, and that most of every day is spent in rehearsal. 

  • In order for your student/child to get the most out of All State, he or she needs to be fully engaged in the experience.  For this reason, All State rules state that cell phones must be off and stored out of sight during rehearsal. Naturally, students want to stay connected by leaving their phones on “silent” or “vibrate.”  While well intended, this does not suffice. All defamatory, abusive, slurs, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal language or actions from parents toward any chaperone, staff, parents, or students affiliated with MMEA or All State will not be tolerated.

 

Phones must be turned off for the duration of rehearsals. Please assure your child that if you need to contact them, you will call the group manager, who will put you in touch with your child. Further, please encourage your child to let friends know that they will be unavailable during All State rehearsals and performances. Violation of this may result in dismissal from the group.  Please take the time to discuss this with your child and your support is appreciated.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Concert Dress Code

All State musicians must dress in professional black for all performances.

 

Please follow the guidelines below for concert attire:

  • Black dress shirt/blouse and black skirt/pants, or black dress;

  • Black solid hose/tights or socks (bare legs should not be visible);

  • Solid black shoes;

  • Additional guidelines:

    • All dresses/skirts/pants must be mid-calf length or lower.

    • All tops must cover the shoulders and stomach.

    • Jewelry should be kept to a minimum. Rings, a small watch, and stud earrings are permissible. 

    • Musicians can wear medals/pins they have earned from previous MMEA All State and Solo and Ensemble events. 

    • Keep hairspray, perfume/cologne, and other fragranced products to a minimum.

    • Choral concerts are frequently performed on risers; please consider this when selecting dress shoes.

Audition Score Requests

MMEA will provide audition scores to school music educators upon request. 

 

We do not accept requests from private instructors, caregivers, or students.

 

We will provide the average score, along with the overall audition comments. Email mmeamarylandinfo@gmail.com to request your students audition scores. Please allow 5-7 business days to process the request.
